A couple of days ago, I actually opened a paid subscription with HeyGen who’s specialty is creating videos using an AI avatar.
A large number pre-created avatars are included and you can always create an avatar of yourself (your AI twin, so to speak).

So, to test HeyGen’s capabilities out, I selected one of the existing avatars, called Sawyer, and had ChatGPT (free account) write me a video script that introduced an AI product called ICE Cold Traffic that writes content for all kinds of media platforms (review here).
I let HeyGen create the video simply from the script, no other mods or edits to tweak the final result.
HeyGen provides three types of video creation models – Avatar III, Avatar IV and the brand new Avatar V.
You can create an unlimited number of videos with Avatar III but both Avatar IV and Avatar V work on a credit system and since this was my first video, I didn’t want to waste credits, so I used Avatar III.
The script window allows you add up to 5,000 characters (not words), which doesn’t sound like a lot, but my script was just over 3,000 characters long and the resulting video was 3 minutes and 6 seconds long.
It looks like you get about 1 minute of video for every 1,000 characters but that will depend on how fast the AI voice speaks.
If you need longer videos, you can splice together different videos using a video editor like DaVinci Resolve, CapCut or OpenShot.
Sawyer speaks with an AI created voice – I presume it was originally cloned from a real person.
The Sawyer AI avatar’s mouth is synced to the voiceover so it looks natural.
In order to create the full marketing video, I wanted to splice in a demo video that was created by the product developer that explains what his product does.
So Sawyer effectively speaks the intro and outro sections of the overall video.
HeyGen does include a studio where it looks like videos can be edited, but I didn’t have the time to delve into that so I used my ancient 2013 version of Camtasia to splice in the product demo and add the transitions between video segments.
You can see the finished video below…
Bear in mind that this is an example of the lowest-quality of AI avatar that HeyGen can create – they only get better with Avatar IV & V.
Let me know what you think of the quality of the AI and the video as a whole (as a marketing video).
