Growing Your List The Modern Way
Have you ever heard the saying, “the money is in the list“?
I bet you have – it’s like a broken record, right?
But hey, if you had a nickel for every time you heard it, you’d probably be a millionaire by now!
Building a list can be tough, whether you’re just getting started or a seasoned pro looking for that extra edge over your competition.
But don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place!
In the next few minutes, I’m going to share some proven ways to help you grow your list faster and more easily.
I’ll even give you a heads-up on a secret tool that very few people know about, but those who do, love it!
You won’t want to miss out on this one.
So, let’s dive in!
You Need To Have An Irresistible Lead Magnet
Alright, so you’re ready to start building your mailing list.
But wait, before you even think about getting visitors to hit that Subscribe button, you need to offer something that will make your prospects say “Wow, I need that in my life!”
That’s right, you need an irresistible lead magnet.
Something that will make your potential subscribers say, “heck yeah, sign me up!”
Gone are the days of just dusting off an old report and hoping it will suffice.
Your lead magnet needs to be fresh, exciting, and attention-grabbing.
So, how do you come up with an irresistible lead magnet?
It’s all about doing your market research.
Take a look at the best-selling info-products in your niche and create something even better.
Remember, if people are already buying content on a certain topic, they’ll be more than happy to get it from you for free!
But don’t stop there.
Your lead magnet shouldn’t be treated as something worth no money.
Instead, give it the same love and attention as you would any of your paid products.
Invest in a professional cover, layout, and design, and be sure that the content itself is engaging and high quality.
It should be something that you could easily sell if you wanted to.
Something you’re proud of and will happily stand over.
Now, let’s move on to the next tip.
Driving Targeted Visitors To Your Offer
If you want to grow your list, you need to generate targeted visitors.
There’s no point in having a great lead magnet if you’re not attracting the right people to see it.
That’s why it’s important to focus on getting your lead magnet in front of the right audience.
You can do this through social media, paid advertising, guest blogging, or any number of other methods.
The key is to find the methods that work best for your niche and audience and then consistently execute them to attract targeted visitors to your site.
So, you’ve got your lead magnet ready to go, and now you need to drive targeted traffic to your lead page.
What’s important here is to make sure that the people who land on your page are genuinely interested in what you’re offering.
Otherwise, your conversions are going to be abysmal.
One common mistake that marketers make is that they cast their targeting net too wide.
They assume that more traffic means more and better conversions.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
Let’s say that you’re running a pay-per-click campaign (on Adwords, for example) for your organic vegetable gardening lead magnet.
If you bid on broad keywords like “organic gardening,” you may get traffic from people who aren’t interested in growing vegetables.
Similarly, if you bid on a broad keyword like “vegetable gardening,” you may get people who aren’t interested in the organic aspect of gardening.
The trick here is to keep your targeting narrow.
In our example, you might bid on keywords like “organic vegetable gardening tips.”
Even better, if you can find a keyword with commercial intent, then you’re more likely to attract a buyer than a mere window shopper.
For instance, try “buy organic vegetable gardening book.”
Create A Compelling Landing Page
So, you’ve got a great freemium to offer, and now you need to create a lead page that really sells it.
A Lead Page is also known as a “Landing Page” or an “Optin Page.
This is where you’ll be directing all that targeted traffic.
The key with this page is to focus on the benefits of your offer and answer the question that’s on your prospect’s mind: “What’s in it for me?”
To make the most of the page, you need to create it so that it’s a compelling page that will entice visitors to give you their email address.
In other words, you need to make sure that your lead page is as irresistible as your lead magnet.
There are a few key elements to a successful lead page.
First, you need a strong headline that grabs your visitors’ attention and promises them something they really want.
Next, you need to describe your lead magnet in a way that makes it sound irresistible.
Be sure to emphasize the benefits, not just the features.
Finally, you need a clear call-to-action.
Tell your visitors exactly what you want them to do, and make it easy for them to do it.
Now, your lead page doesn’t have to be long.
If you opt for short-form copy, you can get away with a benefit-driven headline, a couple of sentences for an opener, a bulleted list of benefits, and a strong call-to-action.
And don’t forget to include an enticing cover graphic!
But here’s the thing – your copy (words) needs to be compelling.
You can’t just throw some words on a page and expect people to sign up for your list.
You need to get your prospects excited about what you’re offering.
Now, if you’re not sure how to do this, don’t worry.
Writing sales copy is a skill that requires a specific structure and style of writing.
It’s all about hitting your audience in their emotional core and making them so eager to get their hands on your lead magnet that they can’t resist clicking that subscription button.
That said, if you’re not confident in your sales copy abilities, consider outsourcing this part of the process.
A professional copywriter can help ensure your lead page is top-notch and converts like crazy.
With these elements in place, you’ll be well on your way to building a high-quality email list.
Oh, and while we’re on the topic of lead pages, let’s dive into another important concept…
Why You Should Provide a Lead Magnet Preview
There’s a little-known secret that almost no one does when it comes to creating a lead magnet.
Want to know what it is?
Providing a preview of your info-product!
Sure, writing compelling copy to convince people to subscribe is great, but nothing beats providing a sneak peek of your lead magnet.
People want to see for themselves just how engaging and useful your freemium offer is before they hand over their email address.
And, lucky for you, there’s an easy way to do this – FlipGuardian.
FlipGuardian is a publishing software that creates an immersive reading experience for your prospects, complete with animated page turns, sound effects, and more.
This isn’t your grandpa’s PDF – it’s something much cooler!

The software has a Lead Gate feature, which means you can show a preview of your lead magnet and then seamlessly capture your prospects’ emails and other information onto your list while unlocking the rest of the product for them.

HI Gary,
I am quite impressed with your post. You have convinced me that you are the real deal. I was considering starting an email list for some time now, and your post has me convinced i can make this work. I started several times to create my email sequence, but that is about all the farther I got. Now, using these tools you have provide me, i will get this thing going once and for all. Thanks Gary!
Building an email list is definitely the way to go, Chas. I had my own struggles with list building – I ignored it for years because I thought it was too hard. As it turns out, it wasn’t but my own fear of the work involved stopped me from building a list.
There is ongoing maintenance work where email lists are concerned. You have to clean them regularly by deleting subscribers who don’t open your emails. So you first have to identify them, send them an email asking if they’re still interested in hearing from you and delete them from your list if you get no response.
Yeah, dropping subscribers is a pain. After all, you work hard to get them in the first place. But unresponsive subscribers cost you money (they may put you in a higher-tiered autoresponder plan than you need) and they affect your email deliverability rate overall.
If Gmail, for example, sees that most people you send emails to don’t open them, they’ll devalue your emails and might start treating them as spam, so even fewer people get to see them.
Some people clean their lists once a week, other do it monthly. It makes sense that the bigger your list, the more often you should clean it as you;ll have a higher number of unresponsive subscribers and dead email addresses.
Then there’s natural attrition where subscribers forget about who you are an stop opening your emails or they do unsubscribe. So you have to be getting new subscribers continually or your list will shrink and die.
But a quality email list is one of the best business assets you can own. It’s the closest thing to owning a personal ATM that you’ll ever have!
All the best,
Gary
